The Inhambane Peninsula

The Inhambane Peninsula, situated 500km north of Maputo, is the gateway to the beautiful beaches of Tofo and Barra.

This region is not only famous for its magnificent pristine beaches, but also for the fact that it is one of the best dive destinations in the world. The diversity and size of the marine life to be experienced (manta rays with a 10m diameter!) draws divers of every level, from far and wide.

The town of Inhambane also makes for interesting day trips, with its historical background and magnificent architecture. The port is one of the first established trading ports in Africa and was renowned for its Arab slave and spice trade in the early days.

The Bazaruto Archipelago

Formed hundreds of thousands of years ago, the Bazaruto Archipelago is a result of mass sand deposits by the waters of the Limpopo River, and is now host to over 2000 fish species and over a hundred coral species.

As a result, this is one of the best destinations in Mozambique for deep sea fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling.

The Bazaruto Archipelago comprises of Bazaruto, Benguerra and Magaruque Islands, as well as the smaller Island Santa Carolina, (previously known as Paradise Island).

The archipelago, declared a National Park in 2000, sustains a diverse range of fauna and flora including forest, savannah and wetland ecosystems.

Maputo, Inhaca and Southern beaches

Mozambique is one of the most culturally colourful countries in Africa and nowhere is this more evident than in Maputo which is home to over 1.3 million people. Apart from the various African Tribes, such as Shangaan and Makonde, cultures vary from Arab to Indian, Chinese and Portuguese. If it's culture and a bit of fun you're looking for, Maputo is the city for you!

Maputo itself does not offer a swimming beach, but conveniently situated just off the bay, lies Inhaca Island; perfect for those too busy to make their way further north to the Islands, or for those who want a short holiday on a great beach without spending hours in a plane.

Ponta do Ouro or "Point of Gold" has earned its well-deserved reputation of being a relaxed area with exceptional diving with a variety of things to behold below the surface. Above the surface there is also much to keep you busy.

The Quirimbas Archipelago

Truly the ideal beach scene: crystal clear seas, beach umbrellas and a drink in hand, this is the Quirimbas Archipelago - the crown jewel of Mozambique tourism. An archipelago of over 43 deserted islands, with only a few being home to locals, and even fewer where tourists share these islands with the locals.

The islands are less than an hour by light aircraft from Pemba itself, and while some, like Ibo Island are home to the locals with whom tourists share the island, others are truly private islands, where the only locals are the staff who wait on you hand and foot for your entire stay.

Quirimbas is also ideal for sportsmen! With excellent fishing and diving, there is something for everyone. For the less active, snorkelling right off the beach is possible from most of the island lodges.

Nampula Province

Ilha de Moçambique, also known as Mozambique Island is situated in the Nampula Province and is a World Heritage Site. This was once the most important town in Mozambique, as well as its capital city, due to the trading across the Indian Ocean.

Situated to the North is the Bay of Nacala, the second deepest natural harbour in the world and an important port. A little further north is the Baixo da Pinda Peninsula and Memba Bay, with its sandy white beaches and secluded bays. Excellent diving and snorkeling can be experienced here.

The main airport serving this area is at Nampula. Car hire is also available and is probably the easiest way to explore the area. There is also an airstrip in Nacala which is perfect for private charters.

National Parks

One of the boldest and most exciting cross-border initiatives currently unfolding in Southern Africa is the development of transfrontier parks and conservation areas. At the forefront is the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park which brings together some of the best and most established wildlife areas in the subcontinent.

The National Parks and Reserves are circumscribed public spaces, which represent the natural national heritage. They aim to protect the biodiversity and fragile ecosystems as well as animal species and vegetation. At the same time, they manage to promote environmental education and eco-tourism.

Mozambique is not just a beach travel destination, it is a once in a lifetime experience. It also offers a breathtaking variety of landscapes to the visitor, from pristine white beaches and turquoise waters, to unique wildlife, mountainous bushveld and unforgettable sunsets.

Welcome to Mozambique, the land of smiles. The white, palmy beaches of Mozambique are very attractive, with their extensive coral reefs hosting a dazzling array of unique marine life offering great diving and sport fishing opportunities.

Mozambique with its numerous African tribes is one of the most culturally diverse countries in Africa, with a blend of African, Arab and Portuguese influences.  This is especially visible in the Afro-Portuguese cuisine and the Latin beat of the music.

To add a unique African safari to your beach holiday, Gorongosa National Park is a must, as well as the Niassa reserve in the far north. Another "must visit" is the World Heritage site of "Ilha De Moçambique", and the magnificent natural harbour of Pemba, to name but a few.
